Orpah Mungure
Orpah was born in 1960 in Weya. She went to school through Grade 4, at which time “my step-mother said, ‘I don’t want you to go to school – you are a girl.’” She was married at age fifteen and has six children. Her husband is a driver and she lives with him most of the year in Harare, coming back to Weya during the planting season.
Orpah does sadza painting and appliqué. She began in 1990, learning from her sister-in-law Loice Mungure. Her husband wasn’t working at the time, “so I wanted to use my hands to help.” Her favorite topics include African marriage and village life.
